Easy Granny Square Bag Crochet Pattern

This pattern creates a square bag made from two large, identical granny squares. The squares are joined together on three sides, leaving one side open for the top of the bag. A crocheted handle is attached, and a single crochet edging is worked around the top opening and handle.

Construction:

  1. Squares (Make 2):
    • Each square starts with a chain-4 ring.
    • Rounds 1 and 2: Work double crochets and chain-2 spaces (for the corners) into the ring, using color A.
    • Rounds 3 and 4: Switch to color B and continue the granny square pattern, working 3 dc in each chain-1 space from the previous round and (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner.
    • Rounds 5 and 6: Switch back to color A and continue the pattern.
    • Rounds 7 and 8: Switch to color B and continue the pattern.
    • Rounds 9 and 10: Switch to color A and continue the pattern. This completes the square.
  2. Joining Squares:
    • The two squares are held with wrong sides (WS) together.
    • Using color B, they are joined with a slip stitch along three sides, leaving the fourth side open for the top of the bag. The joining round uses single crochet.
  3. Handle:
    • The handle is worked in rows using color A.
    • It starts with a chain-73.
    • Three rows of single crochet are worked.
  4. Top Edging:
    • With the right side (RS) facing, color B is joined to the top edge of the bag.
