Directions are for size Small. Changes for size Large are in parentheses.
Hat measures 16 (18)” (40.5 [45.5] cm) circumference at brim.
Beard measures 10″ at widest x 2½” long (25.5 x 6.5 cm).

DIRECTIONS:
GAUGE:
12 sts = 4″ (10 cm); 14 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in single crochet. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.
SPECIAL STITCH:
sc2tog = [Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
SPECIAL TECHNIQUE:
Join with sc = Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.
NOTES:
Hat is worked in continuous (spiral) rounds. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round is completed. Brim is worked in joined rounds.
Beard is worked back and forth in rows. It can be sewn permanently to hat or attached with ties.
Hat
With A, ch 48 (54); taking care not to twist, join with slip st in first ch.
Round 1 (right side): Sc in each ch around. Do not join. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round is completed””48 (54) sc.
Rounds 2–6: Sc in each sc around.
Size Large only:

Rounds 2 and 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with slip st in first sc, turn.
Round 4: Ch 1, working in back loops only; join with slip st in first sc, turn. Brim should now turn up.
Rounds 5 and 6: Repeat Round 2 twice.
Round 7: Ch 1, working in back loops only, (sc, ch 5, sc) in each sc; join with slip st in first sc, turn””96 (108) sc.
Round 8: Ch 1, holding each ch-5 group to front of work and working in back loops only, sc in each sc around; join with slip st in first sc, turn.
Rounds 9–12: Repeat Rounds 7 and 8 twice””384 (432) sc. Fasten off.
Beard
With B, ch 25.
Row 1: Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch to last ch, 2 sc in last ch, turn””26 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, working in back loops only, (sc, ch 3, sc) in first sc, [ch 3, sc] 10 times, [ch 3, sc2tog] twice, [ch 3, sc] 10 times, [ch 3, sc] twice in last sc, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, working in back loops only, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 10 sc, [sc2tog] twice, sc in next 10 sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn.
Rows 4 and 5: Repeat Rows 2 and 3.
Row 6: Repeat Row 2.
Row 7: Ch 1, working in back loops only, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 9 sc, ch 4, skip next 6 sc, sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn””22 sc and 1 ch-4 space.
Row 8: Ch 1, working in back loops only, (sc, ch 3, sc) in first sc, [ch 3, sc] 9 times, sc in next sc, 4 sc in ch-4 space, sc in next sc, [ch 3, sc] 9 times, (sc, ch 3, sc) in last sc, turn””28 sc.
Row 9: Ch 1, holding each ch-3 group to front of work and working in back loops only, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 10 sc, working in both loops, sc in next 6 sc, working in back loops only, sc in next 10 sc, 2 sc in last sc””30 sc. Fasten off.
FINISHING:
Fold last round at top of hat in half and stitch edges together.
With B and pom pom maker, make a 2-1/2″ (6.5 cm) pom pom and sew to top end of hat.
Place hat on wearer’s head and adjust beard to fit. Stitching across ends of rows, sew beard to wrong side of brim. Optional: Cut two 8″ (20.5 cm) lengths of B, attach securely to each end of Row 7 or 8 of beard. Tie beard to Round 2 of hat brim.
Weave in ends.
