MATERIALS: Sport-weight yarn, 3.5 oz (99 gm) skeins: 30 skeins beige, 14 skeins brown, 14 skeins rust, 1 skein white, 2 skeins light brown, 2 skeins ecru. Yarn needle. Crochet hook size F-5 U.S. (size 4 continen-tal) (size 8 U.K.).

MEASUREMENTS: Approx 104 x 104 in. (260 x 260 cm). STITCHES USED: Chain st (ch). Slip st (sI st). Single crochet (sc). Half double crochet (hdc). Double crochet (dc). Treble crochet (tr). Double treble crochet (dtr): « Yarn over hook (3 times), insert hook in st, yarn over hook, draw yarn through st, °° yarn over hook, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook ee, rep from ¢¢ to e¢ 3 times °.

NOTE: Always start with ch 1 instead of first sc, ch 2 instead of first hdc, ch 3 instead of first dc or ch 4 instead of first tr of rnd. End with 1 sl st in first (sc), second (hdc), third (dc) or fourth (tr) ch at beg of rnd.

Square Motif (make 25):

With beige, ch 184 and close into a ring with 1 sl st in first ch.

Rnd 1: *Tr in next 46 ch, ch 4*, rep from * to * around.

Rnd 2: With 1 sl st get to second tr, dc in second tr, do in next tr, oh 1, skip 1 tr,** dc in next 2 tr, ch 1, skip 1 tr*, rep from* to * to corner loop, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 1) in corner loop, skip 1 tr**, rep from ** to** around.

Rnds 3-7: With 2 st st get to first loop, (2 dc, ch 1) in each loop of 1 ch. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 1) in each corner loop.

Rnd 8: Dc in each do, do in each loop of 1 ch, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 do) in each cor- ner Break off thread and fasten.

Rose (make 25)

With rust, ch 8 and close into a ring with 1 sl st in first ch.

Rnd 1: 16 sc in ring.

Rnd 2: Tr in sc, ch 4, skip 1 sc*, rep from * to * around. Break off thread and fasten.

Rnd 3: With white, (hdc, 3 dc, hdc) in each loop around, do not sl st.

Rnd 4: With right side facing, working behind petals, *sc in tr of Rnd 2, ch 5,* rep from * to * around. Break off thread and fasten.

Rnd 5: With beige, (hdc, dc, 3 tr, do, hoc) in each loop around, do not sl st.

Rnd 6: With right side facing, working behind petals, *sc in sc of And 4, ch 6*, rep from * to * around. Break off thread and fasten.

Rnd 7: With light brown, (hdc, 2 dc, 3 tr, 2 dc, hdc) in each loop around, do not sl st.

Rnd 8: With right side fac- ing, working behind petals,* sc in sc of Rnd 6, ch 7*, rep from *to* around. Break off thread and fasten.

Rnd 9: With ecru, (hdc, dc, tr. 3 d tr, tr, dc, hdc) in each loop around. Break off thread and fasten.

With rust, ch 17.

Row 1:Sc in second ch from hook and in next 14 ch, 2 sc in last.ch (17 sc), with brown, sc in same ch (last), sc in next 15 ch working on other side of foundation ch, ch 2, tum,

Row 2: Skip first sc, sc in back loop only of next 15 sc, 2 sc in center sc at point, with rust, sc in same sc at point, sc in back loop only of next 15 sc, ch 2, turn.

Rows 3-10: Rep Row 2 working rust sts in rust sts and brown ste in brown sts. Break off thread and fasten.

Assembly

Sew & Leaves tog as pictured, Sew Rose on right side at center of joined Leaves. Center wrong side of Leaves on right side of Square Motif. Tack the tip of each Leaf into position. Turn entire piece over. Sew opening of Square Motif to wrong side of Leaves working evenly around opening and catching only the back part of Leaf sts.

With right sides tog, carefully matching sts from comer to corner sc Square Motifs tog (5×5) working in the back loops only of each dc.

Border

Rnd 1: With right side facing and beige, dc in back loop only of each st around inc as needed to keep corners fiat. Rnd 2: Sc in each do around inc as needed to keep corners flat. Break off thread and fasten.
